On September 8, the Old Ursuline Convent Museum will open its doors to the public featuring a new exhibit, "Eternal Life".
"Eternal Life" showcases the uniqueness and diversity of New Orleans Catholic Cemeteries, mourning traditions, burial practices, and the veneration of relics. This exhibit highlights exquisite reliquaries, personal effects from deceased Archbishops, archaeological artifacts from St. Peter Street Cemetery, a photographic essay about All Saints’ Day, and it traces the Gallier Family through church records.
The hope is that visitors leave with a better understanding of the various tomb types and forms of symbolism found in these final resting places of New Orleans.
All are welcome to celebrate the new exhibit with free admission on September 9. Tours and light refreshments will be offered throughout the day by the team of archivists that curated the exhibit.
As an added bonus in the month of October, the convent museum will offer guided tours in collaboration with New Orleans Catholic Cemeteries and the Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses on October 21 and 28.
