Local Representation at the Congress
Forty-five parishioners from various Catholic churches in the River Parishes attended the 10th National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis. They will bring back to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans a renewed faith and a desire to spread their love of the Eucharist.

The Voices of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, directed by Veronica Downs-Dorsey, brought rousing, New Orleans Gospel music to the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis.The Voices of St. Peter Claver provided music for the morning Mass celebrated by New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan for thousands of congress attendees.Soloists included the parish's pastor, Father Ajani Gibson, Antoinette Guillory and Clarence Robinson.

Eucharistic ProcessionThe first National Eucharistic Congress procession in 83 years rolled through the streets of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon, and in many ways, it had the feel of a benign, family-friendly Mardi Gras parade: Impromptu singing, pulsating music, T-shirts of all colors and babies being pushed by their moms in strollers.But there was at least one big difference: No one ever genuflects or kneels on the sidewalk as Rex passes on St. Charles Avenue.Shouts of "Cristo Rey! Cristo Rey! (Christ the King)" broke out on Capitol Avenue in downtown Indianapolis as the Blessed Sacrament, exposed in a monstrance, rolled slowly down the street on a flower-bedecked platform pulled by a truck.People on the sidewalk knelt and many took out their cell phones to capture the historic moment. Even Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States, turned around from his position in front of the monstrance and took a quick picture.The last time there was a National Eucharistic procession through the streets was in 1941 in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.New Orleans hosted the 8th National Eucharistic Congress in 1938, and for that event, a five-mile procession was held down Canal Street to City Park Stadium. Many homeowners along the route planted yellow-and-white flowers in honor of the papal colors.

Save the Date!Bishop Andrew Cozzens, who spearheaded the 10th National Eucharistic Congress when some thought it might be an unwieldy, risky venture, had a big announcement at the end of Sunday's closing Mass before 50,000 participants at Lucas Oil Stadium.The 11th National Eucharistic Congress will be held in 2033 – 2,000 years after the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus."We've been trying to discern when would be the best time for this, and coming into this event, we thought the year of redemption – 2033 – 2,000 years since redemption, was worth celebrating."Bishop Cozzens said organizers also have been "discerning" whether or not they could hold another, perhaps smaller events every year.
