About

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (No. 22) states "the Bishop should therefore be determined that the priests, the deacons, and the lay Christian faithful grasp ever more deeply the genuine meaning of the rites and liturgical texts and thereby be led to an active and fruitful celebration of the Eucharist. To the same end, he should also be vigilant that the dignity of these celebrations be enhanced. In promoting this dignity, the beauty of the sacred place, of music, and of art should contribute as greatly as possible." It is the ministry of the Office of Worship to support Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond and act as a resource to parishes for the genuine and fruitful celebration of all sacramental rites, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and liturgical ministries. This includes, but is not limited to the dignity and beauty of the Church's music, art, and architecture.

The goals of the Office of Worship in the Archdiocese of New Orleans are

  • to promote a faithful adherence to the Divine Liturgy as given by Christ and mandated by the Church modeled in practical ways through the planning and coordination of diocesan celebrations and taught through appropriate liturgical trainings
  • to model good liturgy, in practical ways through the planning and coordination of diocesan celebrations
  • to encourage and develop liturgical spirituality among clergy and faithful
  • to review plans for building or renovation of churches in the diocese to ensure the creation of genuine sacred places in accord with the present liturgical norms, in conformity with the historical tradition of our Church, and in a manner that promotes beauty so that liturgy may be celebrated in accordance with liturgical law
  • to act as liturgical advisor to the Archbishop in his role as diocesan liturgist

To accomplish its tasks, the Office of Worship has developed various programs and services that are available to both pastors and the faithful.

  • planning and executing diocese-wide workshops - specifically for Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers, Music Ministers, Ushers & Greeters, and Ministers of Care to the Sick
  • planning and coordinating special Archdiocesan liturgical celebrations
  • acting as a resource on liturgy and ritual for parish liturgical coordinators, committees, ministers and diocesan offices
  • supporting parish music ministers through sponsorship of a diocesan chapter of NPM (National Pastoral Musicians)
  • collaborating with and implementing the work done by the diocesan Liturgical Commission

Our team is designed to assist you in remaining faithful to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church when celebrating the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. Additional support is also available for training employees and parishioners who either participate as ministers to the faithful or simply want to increase their understanding of our faith.
