THEOLOGY ON TAP
Topic:        DOES HEALING HEALTHCARE REQUIRE A MIRCALE?                   
Speaker: Dr. Elmore Rigamer is the medical director for Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans

 

The U.S. Catholic Bishops have called on Catholics to be informed about Catholic principles and teachings that should guide any reform of healthcare in the United States, especially as neither political party nor ideology adequately reflects the total Catholic position. FEAST OF BLESSED FRANCIS XAVIER SEELOS

A Mass in honor of Blessed Francis X. Seelos’ Feast Day will be celebrated on Sunday, October 4, at 1:00p.m. at the National Seelos Shrine/St. Mary’s Assumption Church (919 Josephine Street at Constance Street/Irish Channel).  There will be an opportunity to venerate Fr.Seelos’ relic and one on one intercessory prayer will also be available starting at 11:45a.m.  The church is wheelchair accessible and free parking will be available.  For more information call 504-525-2495.

HOLY SPIRIT HEALING RETREAT

Fr. Mike Snyder, A.P., Pat Guizerix and Al Mansfield will lead a Holy Spirit Healing Retreat October 2-4, at Lumen Christi Retreat Center in Schriever, Louisiana.  The theme is, “The Healing Love of Jesus”.  This weekend will be “intensely Eucharistic” with times of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, celebration of Mass, talks and personal prayer ministry.  The retreat is sponsored by the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of New Orleans (CCRNO), an Office of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. RED MASS

The St. Thomas Moore Catholic Lawyers Association will sponsor the annual Red Mass to invoke the power of the Holy Spirit upon members of the judiciary and attorneys in the Archdiocese of New Orleans on Monday, October 5 at 9:30 am at St. Louis Cathedral.  New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond will be the main celebrantand Shreveport Bishop Michael Duca will be the homilist.

CHRIST IN THE CITY

The next Christ in the City will be held Tuesday, October 6 at the Notre Dame Seminary Chapel on Carrollton Avenue at 7 pm.  Christ in the City is an evening of Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction for Catholic young adults.  A priest is always available for confessions during the event held the first Tuesday of every month. A social hour follows at Ye Olde College Inn.

Topic:        CALLED TO BE IN THAT NUMBER
Speaker:                       Sr. Doris Goudeaux SSF is the promoter of the cause of canonization of Mother Henriette Delille, Servant of God, foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Family.                       

Come explore the place of saints in our Catholic tradition, and take a closer look at the canonization process through the story of Mother Henriette Delille of New Orleans. Thursday, October 8 at 6pm; Mid-City Lanes Rock ‘n Bowl.

Topic:        CAUGHT BETWEEN SATURDAY NIGHT & SUNDAY MORNING
Speaker: Jason Angelette works at Willwoods Community, an organization of Catholic couples committed to providing programs and resources to support sacramental marriage.  Jason also co-hosts the archdiocesan program Issues & Faith on WLAE Television, and is a presenter for Dumb Ox Productions.

Our speaker will explore the difficult position that many young adults find themselves in: caught between two competing social circles - one passionately religious and other luke-warm and mostly secular.  How can Catholic young adults bridge that divide? Thursday, October 15 at 6 pm; Mid-City Lanes Rock ‘n Bowl.

MEN’S MORNING OF SPIRITUALITY

Catholic men of all ages are invited to the Men’s Morning of Spirituality on Saturday, October 17 from 9am to 12:30 pm at St. Rita Church in New Orleans.  Archbishop Aymond will celebrate Mass, priests will be available for confessions, there will be time for Eucharistic Adoration, and a talk by Dan Spencer, The Battle for Sexual Integrity which will focus on chastity, purity, physical integrity and anti-pornography. Also Jason Angelette, Director of the Willwoods Community Faith and Marriage Ministry will give his personal faith witness.

YOUNG WOMEN’S SUMMIT

All young Catholic women are invited to attend the Young Women's Summit, sponsored by the Office of Black Catholic Ministries on Saturday, October 17 in the Xavier University Ballroom.  The keynote address will be: "God, Why Me?" and will focus on examining and deepening your relationship with God.  Workshop topics include: My Fabulosity; Being the Beyonce of Prayer; Stand Firm in Your Faith; and Why am I Catholic?. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

World Mission Sunday - a Eucharistic celebration for all the missions of the world will be observed on October 18, 2009.  The second collection in all parishes is destined for a common fund of solidarity distributed in the Pope’s name, by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, among the Missions and missionaries of the world.  A special commissioning for all missionaries will be held at the 11:00a.m Mass at the St. Louis Cathedral.

BEGINNING EXPERIENCE FOR SEPRATED, DIVORCED OR WIDOWED CATHOLICS

The archdiocesan Family Life Apostolate will sponsor a Beginning Experience weekend October 23 – 25 at the Lumen Christi Retreat House in Houma, Louisiana.  Beginning Experience is a powerful, positive and spiritual weekend program designed to help separated, divorced and widowed people make a new beginning in their lives:  a time to begin again. MASS FOR VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS OF VIOLENCE

Most Reverend Alfred Hughes, Archbishop Emeritus of New Orleans will celebrate a special Mass to pray to end violence in our streets on Sunday, October 25 at 11 am at St. Louis Cathedral.  All are invited to worship in solidarity with those in our community who have been touched in any way by violence, and to pray for an end to this evil that plagues our city. Those who have lost a loved one to violence are asked to bring a picture or symbol to represent the presence of the loved one in memory, in prayer and in love. A candlelight vigil will immediately follow in Jackson Square.

Topic:        WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?
Speaker: Archbishop Emeritus Alfred C. Hughes is recently retired after serving as Archbishop of New Orleans from 2002-2009                  

 

Pope Benedict XIV has chosen love as a central topic in his two first encyclicals.  We’ll have an opportunity to learn about the purpose and place of a papal encyclical through a look at Deus Caritas Est and Caritas et Vertitate. Thursday, October 22 at 6 pm; Mid-City Lanes Rock ‘n Bowl.

CATHOLIC FOUNDATION ANNUAL DINNER

The Catholic Foundation's Annual Dinner will be Thursday, October 29 at 6 pm at the Hilton Riverside.  The event will feature keynote speaker Ralph Martin, host of "The Choices We Face" on EWTN.  At the dinner, Betty Lauricella will be honored with the Pope John Paul II award for outstanding service to the local Catholic Church. Guests are asked to consider sponsoring a local priest's attendance this year in honor of the Year for Priests.  Tickets are $125 per person.  For more information call (504) 596-3045. 

RETROUVAILLE WEEKEND FOR TROUBLED MARRIAGES

The Family Life Apostolate of the Archdiocese of New Orleans will host a Retrouvaille weekend October 30 – November 1 at the Lumen Christi Center in Houma.  Retrouvaille is a program designed to provide help and support to married couples who are undergoing difficulties in their relationship.  Sponsored by the Catholic Church, the program is open to couples of all faiths and has proven successful to couples who are troubled and stressed, or who have grown cold and distant.
